What makes the design of the Spyderco Matriarch 2 unique, is its reverse “S” shaped blade of the Matriarch 2 that is highly effective when cutting, using just the tip, or when using a full arm motion. The result is a knife that provides extreme cutting performance in a convenient, lightweight package.

History and Lineage

The Matriarch 2 Spyder Knife traces its lineage to one of Spyderco's oldest and unique designs; the C12 Civilian. The "Civilian" began its journey of construction in response to a request from a U.S. Federal Law Enforcement Agencies. Agents in undercover narcotics operations made it impossible for them to carry firearms.

The was necessary for the agents to have a knife that could serve as a potent defensive weapon. With minimum training and excellent gross motor skills, the Matriarch 2 Spyder Knife is a compelling personal defense device.

Spyderco's founder, Sal Glesser, designed the original Civilian to meet this need. The process earned a patent on its distinctive Reverse "S" edge profile. The "sinuous sharp-edged ridges (French for knife-edge) maximizes the cutting potential of the blade. A high-quality knife-blade longitudinally moves the cutting material along its curved edge.

What makes the design unique is its reverse "S" style blade of the Spyderco Matriarch 2? This knife is highly efficient when cutting. You can use just the tip when using a full arm motion. The curvature of the edge sweeps into a fine tip that passes quickly through the material. The Spyderco Matriarch2 is much like a cat's claw, but with the added ferocity of serrations.

The Spyderco Matriarch 2 presents an aggressive blade shape that is imposing, lightweight, and convenient to carry. The Civilian took nearly three years to complete its design. Therefore, a limited-production item attracts considerable interest. The Spyderco Matriarch2 is one of the world's most visually dramatic folding knives.

Spyderco responded by mating a Civilian-style blade to the fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) handle of the popular Endura model. The result was the first Matriarch and yet another "instant classic."

The original Matriarch was available with both gray and black handles for several years. The original Matriarch is no longer in production. In 2010, a flat-ground, brown-handled "sprint" run (a limited one-time production run of a particular variant) of the Matriarch. The design also helped promote the Matriarch 2 as a regular production model.

Construction and Materials

The Matriarch 2 Spyer Knife is built upon Spyderco's fashionable Endura 4 design. Its full skeletonized stainless steel liners provide an outstanding balance of strength and lightweight. The injection-molded FRN handle boasts Bi-Directional Texturing for a superior grip. The injection-molded handle is efficient even under the most demanding conditions. A sturdy back lock mechanism locks the blade securely in the open position. The Boye dent in the lock bar helps prevent unintentional lock release. Additionally, the screw-together construction and phosphor-bronze washers ensure maximum precision and smooth operation.

The blade of the Matriarch 2 is hollow ground from VG-10 stainless steel. The Matriarch2 features the signature Reverse "S" edge profile of the classic Civilian. The Reverse "S" maximizes the cutting performance in all areas of its edge. Accordingly, the point is thicker than the Civilian. Subsequently, the Reverse "S"  increases strength. It also is strategically shaped to nest discreetly into the handle in the closed position.
